Artpace

Artpace is less a museum built around a permanent collection than a working laboratory for contemporary art. Three times each year, a guest curator selects one Texas artist, one national artist and one international artist to live and work in San Antonio, giving them time and space to develop new projects that culminate in public exhibitions. That residency model makes artistic process central to the institution rather than something hidden behind the finished work.

Because exhibitions turn over with the residency and gallery calendar, no two visits are guaranteed to look alike. Visitors may encounter installations, sculpture, video, painting or other experimental work, often with interpretive material that explains the artist's project and the ideas behind it. The compact footprint means a self-guided visit can be relatively quick, but people who read closely or attend talks and openings can spend much longer engaging with the work.

Artpace sits in Downtown West a few blocks from Main Plaza, the River Walk and central civic landmarks. Free admission and a dedicated parking lot across the street make it easy to add to a downtown itinerary without the time commitment of a large encyclopedic museum. It also provides useful context for Ruby City: both institutions grew from Linda Pace's commitment to contemporary art, but Artpace emphasizes the creation of new work through residencies while Ruby City presents the foundation collection and curated exhibitions.
