The refuge formerly known as Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge anchors a broad stretch of upper Texas Coast habitat where freshwater and brackish wetlands, coastal prairie and bayous support waterfowl, shorebirds, alligators and other Gulf Coast wildlife. Its current federal name is Jocelyn Nungaray National Wildlife Refuge.
For first-time visitors, the Shoveler Pond auto loop is the most accessible orientation to the landscape. Short trails, a marsh boardwalk, observation platforms and wildlife blinds let travelers slow down and scan habitat without committing to a long backcountry outing, while refuge shorelines and bayous add fishing access.
