Columbus

Columbus has one of the more concentrated historic cores among small towns between Houston and Austin. The 1890 Colorado County Courthouse anchors the square, while the Stafford Opera House, historic commercial buildings, old water tower and preserved residences create a walkable architecture-and-history circuit.

The Columbus Historical Preservation Trust has built a visitor layer around these structures through interpreted historic sites and driving-tour material. The Chamber adds a current community calendar centered on the courthouse square, including markets, festivals and seasonal events that keep the historic district active rather than purely museum-like.

A first visit works best as a courthouse-square walk plus one deeper preservation stop, followed by time along the river corridor or a nearby rural drive. Columbus is especially useful as an I-10 heritage stop because its architecture and visitor services are close enough together to support either a focused half day or an overnight weekend.
