Life and career
Troy Aikman was born in California and raised in Oklahoma, where he became a high-school football standout. He began college at Oklahoma before transferring to UCLA, so the formative path to the NFL was outside Texas. The Texas chapter began when Dallas selected him first overall in the 1989 NFL draft.
Aikman's rookie Cowboys went 1–15, but the franchise changed rapidly around him. With a dominant offensive line, Emmitt Smith, Michael Irvin and a deep defense, Dallas won three Super Bowls in four seasons. Aikman's accuracy and postseason play made him the quarterbacking constant of that run. His later broadcasting career kept him visible nationally, but the historical reason he belongs in a Texas Icons roster is the Cowboys transformation from collapse to 1990s dynasty.
