Life and career
George Edward Foreman was born in Marshall, Texas, in 1949 and grew up in Houston's Fifth Ward. After leaving school early, he entered the Job Corps, where boxing coach Charles 'Doc' Broadus helped redirect his athletic ability. Foreman won Olympic heavyweight gold in 1968 and became heavyweight champion in 1973 by defeating Joe Frazier. His 1974 loss to Muhammad Ali in the Rumble in the Jungle became one of boxing's defining events.
After a 1977 religious experience, Foreman retired from boxing, became an ordained minister and developed a Houston church and youth center. Financial pressure on the youth work helped motivate a comeback, and in 1994 he knocked out Michael Moorer at age 45 to regain a heavyweight title, becoming the oldest heavyweight champion at that time. His later endorsement of the George Foreman Grill made him a major business figure, but the product was only one part of a broader reinvention that also remained rooted in Houston ministry and community work. Foreman died in 2025 at age 76.
