Life and career
Earl Christian Campbell was born in Tyler in 1955 and became known as the Tyler Rose. At the University of Texas, he developed from a highly recruited East Texas runner into the program's first Heisman Trophy winner in 1977. His combination of speed and contact balance made him a national college star without severing the local identity attached to Tyler.
The Houston Oilers selected Campbell first overall in the 1978 NFL draft. He immediately won major rookie and most-valuable-player honors, then led the league in rushing in each of his first three seasons. His 1,934 rushing yards in 1980 remain the signature peak of that run.
