Tim Duncan

Tim Duncan was born on St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands and played four years at Wake Forest before San Antonio selected him first overall in 1997. His Texas identity therefore begins with professional basketball, but few imported athletes became more thoroughly associated with one Texas city: Duncan played every NBA season for the Spurs.

Across that career he won five NBA championships, two regular-season MVP awards and three Finals MVP awards while making fifteen All-Star teams. The Spurs changed supporting casts and tactical styles around him, from the David Robinson partnership to the Tony Parker–Manu Ginobili era and later motion-heavy teams. Duncan's value as a Texas icon lies in that continuity: San Antonio's most successful professional-sports era was built around a player who stayed with one franchise from draft night through retirement.

Duncan's case is less about celebrity than structural importance. Five championships across fifteen years made him the constant through multiple versions of the Spurs.

His San Antonio identity is professional and adopted, not biographical shorthand for birthplace. Preserving St. Croix and Wake Forest makes the depth of that later city-franchise bond clearer.
