George W. Bush

George Walker Bush was born in New Haven, Connecticut, in 1946 but grew up largely in Midland and Houston after his family moved to Texas. After Yale, service in the Texas Air National Guard and an MBA from Harvard, he returned to Midland and worked in the oil and gas business. In 1989 he led a partnership that purchased the Texas Rangers baseball franchise and served as managing general partner, a highly visible Texas role that preceded his statewide political career.

Bush defeated incumbent governor Ann Richards in 1994 and served as Texas's 46th governor from January 1995 until December 2000, winning reelection in 1998. He became the 43rd president in January 2001 and served two terms. His presidency was dominated by the response to the September 11 attacks and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, while major domestic and international initiatives included tax legislation, the No Child Left Behind education law and the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief. After leaving office in 2009, Bush returned to Texas and established his presidential center at Southern Methodist University in Dallas.

Bush's Texas identity was central to his national political brand: Midland's oil economy, the Rangers, the governorship and his Crawford-area ranch all became recurring reference points in his public life. His gubernatorial records are preserved in partnership between the George W. Bush Presidential Library and the Texas State Library and Archives Commission.
