Gary Clark Jr. was born in Austin in 1984 and began playing guitar as a child. As a teenager he performed around Austin, including at Antone's, where access to working blues musicians gave him an unusually direct apprenticeship in the city's club tradition. His early independent releases and festival appearances eventually led to a major-label deal and the 2012 album Blak and Blu.
Clark's national work has repeatedly crossed genre boundaries. He has won Grammys in traditional R&B, rock and contemporary blues categories, and This Land combined guitar-driven blues-rock with R&B, hip-hop and social commentary. His later role as a part owner of Antone's gives the Austin relationship a second dimension: he is not only an alumnus of the scene but also one of the people helping preserve a club that shaped it.
