Spoon formed in Austin in 1993 around Britt Daniel and Jim Eno. The band emerged from the city's independent-rock ecosystem and released early records through Matador and Elektra before a difficult major-label period briefly threatened its momentum. Rather than ending the band, that setback preceded a run of increasingly successful independent releases that established a distinctive economy of arrangement: clipped guitars, dry drums, negative space and tightly structured hooks.
Albums including Girls Can Tell, Kill the Moonlight, Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga, They Want My Soul and Lucifer on the Sofa built a national and international audience over decades. Austin remained part of Spoon's public identity even as recording and touring became global.
