The Chicks

The group formed in Dallas in 1989 and initially worked in a bluegrass and acoustic-country format. Its best-known commercial lineup developed after Natalie Maines joined sisters Martie Maguire and Emily Strayer, leading to the breakthrough albums Wide Open Spaces, Fly and Home. The combination of close harmony, instrumental skill and contemporary country production made the trio a dominant late-1990s and early-2000s act.

In March 2003, during a London concert shortly before the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq, Maines criticized President George W. Bush and said the group was ashamed he was from Texas. The comment produced intense backlash that included country-radio losses, organized protests and threats. Rather than reduce that episode to a partisan verdict, its lasting importance is that it exposed how artist speech, radio gatekeeping and fan identity could rapidly reshape a major commercial career. Taking the Long Way and Not Ready to Make Nice later addressed the rupture and swept major Grammy categories in 2007. The group adopted the shorter name The Chicks in 2020.

The Chicks' musical legacy combines bluegrass instrumentation, pop-scale country success and unusually strong vocal arrangements. Their Dallas origin predates the polished major-label version of the group by years.

The 2003 controversy remains part of American media history because it showed the commercial consequences that could follow political speech in a highly networked radio format. The later Grammy sweep made the episode inseparable from the group's artistic comeback, regardless of a listener's politics.
