Asleep at the Wheel formed in 1970 on a farm in Paw Paw, West Virginia. The band later spent time in the Bay Area before encouragement from Willie Nelson and Doug Sahm helped pull it toward Austin. It arrived in the Austin scene in 1973 and made the permanent move in 1974. That chronology matters: the group became a Texas institution by adoption and sustained work, not because it originated in the state.
Ray Benson is the band's leader and only remaining original member, while more than one hundred musicians have passed through its lineups. Across decades of touring and recording, Asleep at the Wheel has kept Western Swing in active circulation through its own material and projects devoted to Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys.
