José Altuve

José Altuve was born in Maracay, Venezuela, signed with Houston as a teenager and debuted in 2011. Unlike many Texas sports icons on this roster, his connection to the state comes entirely through one professional franchise rather than birthplace or schooling.

Altuve won the 2017 American League MVP and was a central player on Houston's 2017 and 2022 championship teams. The 2017 title also sits within MLB's later-confirmed Astros electronic sign-stealing scandal; MLB disciplined club leadership over the team's scheme while separately saying its investigation found no evidence supporting later claims that players used wearable devices. In April 2026 Altuve became only the third player to appear in 2,000 games for the Astros, joining Craig Biggio and Jeff Bagwell; because he remains active, career totals should be treated as date-stamped rather than final.

Altuve became one of the longest-tenured and most decorated players in Astros history.
