Life and career
Chad Lamont Butler, known as Pimp C, was born in Port Arthur in 1973 and grew up around jazz, blues, soul and formal music instruction. He studied instruments and voice before focusing on rap production, eventually forming UGK with Bernard 'Bun B' Freeman. His beats used live-feeling bass, organ, guitar, soul samples and Gulf Coast musical references that distinguished UGK from both East Coast and West Coast rap production.
UGK became nationally influential through Ridin' Dirty, Big Pimpin' and Underground Kingz. Pimp C also spent several years incarcerated after a probation violation tied to an aggravated-assault case; the period generated the Free Pimp C campaign and became part of his public mythology. He was released in 2005, reunited with Bun B and saw Underground Kingz reach No. 1 in 2007. He died later that year in California; the death was ruled accidental and attributed to codeine/promethazine combined with sleep apnea.

Pimp C's influence is as much production history as rap history. His arrangements tied Southern hip-hop to older Gulf Coast soul and blues textures and gave UGK a musical identity that younger Southern producers repeatedly cited and reworked.
