Michael Ellis DeBakey was born in Lake Charles, Louisiana, and trained at Tulane. He developed the roller pump while still a medical student, an invention later essential to heart-lung machines. In 1948 he moved to Houston to chair surgery at Baylor College of Medicine.
Over the following decades DeBakey pioneered vascular and cardiovascular procedures, trained generations of surgeons and helped expand Baylor and the Texas Medical Center's international reputation. His Texas importance is institutional and medical rather than biographical shorthand: Houston was the setting for the defining work, not his birthplace.
