Howard Robard Hughes Jr. was born in Houston in 1905. His father built the Hughes Tool Company around oil-drilling technology, and the younger Hughes inherited control of the family business while still a teenager. He left Rice Institute and moved into filmmaking and aviation, but Houston remained the financial origin of the fortune that enabled those ventures.
Hughes set aviation records, backed advanced aircraft development and gained control of TWA. His H-1 Racer became a landmark of streamlined aircraft design. His later life was marked by extreme isolation and complicated corporate and legal disputes, so the profile should not reduce him to either a glamorous aviator or an eccentric recluse.
