Life and career
Harry Huntt Ransom was born in Galveston in 1908, earned graduate degrees in English at Yale and joined the University of Texas faculty in 1935. Apart from Army Air Forces service during World War II, he remained tied to UT for the rest of his career, rising through faculty and administrative ranks.
Ransom became UT president and then chancellor of the University of Texas System. He argued that world-class library and archival collections were central to a great university and founded the Humanities Research Center in 1957. The institution was renamed the Harry Ransom Center in 1974, but his wider legacy also includes honors programs, library expansion and university-system leadership.
