William Royce 'Boz' Scaggs was born in Canton, Ohio, in 1944 and moved with his family through Oklahoma to Plano, Texas. In the Dallas area he attended St. Mark's School of Texas, met Steve Miller and began playing guitar and performing in bands while absorbing blues, R&B and roots music heard on North Texas radio.
Scaggs later played with the Steve Miller Band before establishing a solo career. His 1976 album Silk Degrees became his commercial breakthrough. Decades later he discussed using hard-disk recording, loops and digital workstations in studio production, but that makes him an adopter and practitioner of digital recording—not a Plano technology inventor.
