Integrity: reconstructed from evidence
Saints Cyril and Methodius at Dubina
Texas Historical Commission travel coverage and the Schulenburg Chamber identify Dubina as one of the defining painted churches of the Fayette County heritage route.
Preservation authority guide
Some Texas Painted Church interiors were covered rather than destroyed. Dubina is the clearest example: the earlier decorative work was whitewashed in the 1950s, then surviving traces and recovered stencils helped guide a community restoration in the 1980s.
How Texas Defined uses this term
How to read preservation evidence
Preservation language can describe very different kinds of work. Original painted fabric, later repainting, reconstruction from surviving evidence and a modern conservation campaign should not be treated as interchangeable. The useful question is not simply whether an interior looks old or newly painted, but what the source says survives, what was altered and what evidence guided later work.
For that reason, Texas Defined keeps the preservation claim tied to a documented church relationship and a source trail. A vivid present-day interior does not automatically prove that every color, motif or surface is original, just as a restored interior is not automatically less historically important. The church-specific profile carries the narrower evidence about integrity, chronology and documented intervention.
Current visitor conditions can also change independently of preservation history. Restoration work, parish schedules, access rules and temporary closures should be checked with the church or managing organization before a trip. This page is intended to explain the preservation concept and documented example, not to substitute for current operating information.
