Story and significance
The Shiner Brewing Association began brewing in Shiner in 1909, serving a Czech- and German-Texan farming community that wanted locally made beer in old-world styles. Bavarian-trained brewmaster Kosmos Spoetzl arrived during the brewery's early years and became the figure most closely associated with the operation that now bears his name.
The brewery survived Prohibition by producing legal products including near beer and ice, then continued through changing ownership and wider distribution. Shiner Bock eventually became its best-known label, but geography remains central to the brand story: the brewery still produces its beer in Shiner, Texas.
