Sammy Baugh was born in Temple and grew up in Sweetwater before starring at TCU. Washington selected him in the first round in 1937, beginning a 16-season career that coincided with a major shift in how professional football used the forward pass.
Baugh won six NFL passing titles, led the league in punting four straight years and, in 1943, led in passing, interceptions and punting. He entered the Pro Football Hall of Fame's inaugural class in 1963.
