Texas story
Life and career
Patrick Wayne Swayze was born in Houston in 1952 and grew up in the Oak Forest area. His mother, Patsy Swayze, was a choreographer and dance teacher, and he trained at her studio while also pursuing football, gymnastics, swimming and other sports. He later studied gymnastics at San Jacinto College before leaving Texas for professional dance training in New York.
Swayze's screen career joined dance and acting in roles such as Dirty Dancing, Ghost, Road House and Point Break. His Texas story is not simply birthplace-based: Houston family training, local schools and San Jacinto College formed the technical foundation for the career that followed.
