Life and career
Kenny Rogers was born in Houston on August 21, 1938, and grew up in public housing. His musical education was broader than the country label later attached to him: Houston exposed him to R&B, pop, jazz and country, and his first professional group, the Scholars, formed while he was in high school. He also recorded as a solo singer and played bass in a Houston jazz trio before joining the New Christy Minstrels and then helping form the First Edition.
After the First Edition ended, Rogers became a major solo country-pop artist. Lucille, The Gambler, Lady, Coward of the County and duets with Dottie West and Dolly Parton carried country storytelling into pop radio and arenas. He also acted, photographed, wrote books and pursued business and philanthropic work. The Country Music Hall of Fame inducted him in 2013; he died March 20, 2020. Houston is therefore more than a birthplace label: it explains the cross-genre background that preceded his national success.
