Life and career
Katherine Anne Porter was born in Indian Creek in 1890 and spent much of her childhood in Kyle after the death of her mother. Family stories, Catholicism, Texas social life and the instability of her early years later appeared in transformed form throughout her fiction.
Porter worked as a journalist and lived widely before establishing herself as a major short-story writer and novelist. Her Collected Stories won both the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award, while Ship of Fools became her best-known novel.
