Life and career
Guy Charles Clark was born in Monahans, Texas, on November 6, 1941, and grew up in Texas before entering the Houston folk circuit. His early work as a performer, guitar repairman and visual artist fed a songwriting method built around craft: specific rooms, roads, tools, food, weather and people rather than abstract country imagery. He married artist and songwriter Susanna Clark, whose own creative career was intertwined with the community they later built.
Clark moved to Nashville in 1971, but his house and workshop became a bridge between Texas writers and Music Row rather than a clean break from the state. Townes Van Zandt, Rodney Crowell, Steve Earle and other writers moved through that circle, while Clark's songs were recorded by Johnny Cash, Jerry Jeff Walker, Ricky Skaggs, Vince Gill, Emmylou Harris and many others. He entered the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2004 and won his first Grammy in 2014 for My Favorite Picture of You. Clark died in 2016.
