Life and career

Eugene Francis Kranz was born in Toledo, Ohio, in 1933 and trained as an aeronautical engineer and Air Force pilot before joining NASA in 1960. He moved with the human-spaceflight program into Houston and rose from Mercury assistant flight director to flight director during Gemini and Apollo.

Kranz served as a flight director for the Apollo 11 lunar landing and led the White Team during the Apollo 13 crisis, when Mission Control reorganized a failed lunar mission into a crew-rescue operation. He later became NASA's director of mission operations at Johnson Space Center and retired in 1994. His Texas claim is institutional rather than natal: Houston Mission Control is the core of the biography.
