Texas story

Life and career

Anthony Francis Lucas was born in Hvar, Dalmatia, and developed expertise in salt and petroleum geology before coming to the Gulf Coast. In 1899 he connected with Pattillo Higgins's Spindletop effort near Beaumont and became convinced that the salt dome could hold petroleum despite skepticism from many contemporary geologists.

Lucas's first attempt exhausted his resources, so he brought in outside financing and drilling expertise. On January 10, 1901, the well drilled with the Hamill crew erupted into the famous Lucas gusher. The discovery transformed Southeast Texas and accelerated the rise of large-scale petroleum refining, transportation and industry.

Legacy

Why the story lasts

Lucas helped validate the relationship between Gulf Coast salt domes and petroleum, making geological theory a central part of the Spindletop story.

The discovery was collaborative: Higgins, Lucas, financiers and the Hamill drilling crew all belong in an accurate account.
