How to Estimate Texas Utility Costs
Build an address-specific budget for electricity, water, wastewater, gas, internet, trash, pools and irrigation.
A Texas utility budget is not one statewide average. A compact El Paso apartment, an all-electric DFW house and a coastal home with heavy air-conditioning demand can have very different monthly totals.
Include every recurring service
- Electricity and delivery charges.
- Water, wastewater, drainage and drought-stage rates.
- Natural gas or propane.
- Internet, equipment and post-promotion pricing.
- Trash and recycling.
- Pool pumps, irrigation, septic service, wells or electric-vehicle charging.
Electricity markets are local
Many Texans in competitive territories can choose a retail plan, while municipal utilities and cooperatives serve their own areas. Compare the Electricity Facts Label, contract term, early termination fee and how credits or minimum-use rules affect the price at realistic usage.
Ask for a full year
A spring bill is a poor stand-in for August. Compare kilowatt-hour and water usage across a full year, then apply current rates. Include setup deposits and overlapping service in the moving budget.
